Blonde Jovi or Jon Bon Jovi

Although I was wondering if this was a late April Fool’s joke when I first read it, apparently this story isn’t one that someone made up to honor that tradition.

As reported by Australian music site Undercover, an all-female tribute band has found themselves in the crosshairs of Bon Jovi’s crack legal team. Never having been a rock star myself, I have know way to know if this is something that the group’s legal eagles do as part of their normal duties without making anyone in the group aware of it or not. That seems unlikely, but I’m no lawyer and have never even been friends with one!

One thing is for sure, however, if they were not aware of it before, they are now.

The Artists Formely Known As Blonde Jovi

Who would want to pick on these ladies?

One would presume that it is well within the group’s power to put a stop to foolishness like this. You know, ring up the suits at “Blakely Sokoloff Taylor And Zafman” and tell them to back off.

As others around the net have pointed out, the tribute band calling itself “Blonde Jovi” (nice play on words, by the way) are obviously fans of the original group. Heck, they probably all had crushes on pretty boy Jon Bon Jovi at one time or another during their lives. And after viewing their site on MySpace, I’d have to say that having some of these ladies pining for you would not be a bad thing!

Speaking of their MySpace page, it appears that the ladies may have caved to the demands made of them by Bon Jovi’s lawyers. Although I reached their page at this URL: http://www.myspace.com/blondejovi, there are now signs that the group is calling itself “Blonde Jersey.” Reading further, I was able to confirm that they have indeed changed their name as a result of the legal action that was being threatened.

How pathetic is that?

I’m seated firmly on the bandwagon with Undercover on this one, and will echo their sentiment that this is indeed a new low for Bon Jovi if they allow something like this to remain final. This whole thing should be called off and they should tell the ladies that they can resume the use of their original name.

This whole thing would be understandable if these ladies were out there performing for big crowds at major venues and making records, but it’s a local tribute band who are probably working their butts off playing clubs and other small venues just trying to make a living, and honoring Bon Jovi at the same time!

You don’t see the guys from Led Zeppelin sending their legal attack dogs after Lez Zeppelin, do you? And that name even more closely matches the original. Heck, I’ve even seen Lez Zeppelin ringtones for sale on some of the major ringtone websites. Apparently, Plant, Page and Jones are sensible enough to appreciate the sentiment.

Gee, I hope the ladies don’t have to worry about the state of New Jersey coming after them now that they are calling themselves “Blonde Jersey” until they come up with something they like better. Perhaps they could borrow a page from Prince’s handbook and call themselves “The Artists Formerly Known As Blonde Jovi,” but I suppose that wouldn’t keep the lawyers off their backs since it still contains the sacred word “Jovi.”

At the risk of being redundant, which in this case I feel is warranted: How pathetic.

Cleveland Rocks As Hall Of Fame Festivities Begin

Gary Graff, Cleveland

In the throes of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame mania, Cleveland was loaded with revelry on the night before Saturday’s induction ceremony.

About 1,200 people turned out Friday night for an official VIP induction pre-party at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, including inductees Bobby Womack — who was mobbed by fans as he tried to enter with members of his family and barely made it past the lobby — Spooner Oldham and DJ Fontana, the Connie Mizell-Perry, the mother of the late Run-DMC DJ Jam Master Jay, and former Beach Boy Al Jardine, who was squired around on a personal tour by Hall of Fame curator Howard Kramer. The attendees feasted at several food stations offering everything from sushi to beef filets and gourmet deserts and were able to view a new film about this year’s inductees as well as a special display featuring musical instruments, clothing and other artifacts.

Dave Mason, inducted into the Hall in 2004 with Traffic, played an acoustic set that included the band’s “Dear Mr. Fantasy” and his rendition of Bob Dylan’s “All Along the Watchtower,” while home town heroes the Raspberries paid tribute to the Who by covering “Substitute,” then were joined by “Late Night with David Letterman” band bassist Will Lee for an encore set of Beatles songs (“Ticket to Ride,” “Baby’s in Black” and “No Reply”) and another Who hit, “Can’t Explain.” Reggie Calloway of Midnight Star, meanwhile, made sure there was indeed “No Parking on the Dance Floor.”

Across town, Metallica and the dozens of specially invited guests the band is hosting this weekend busted capacity at the House of Blues, while fellow inductees Little Anthony & the Imperials rocked through a long set at the Agora — despite a shoudler injury Jerome “Little Anthony” Gourdine  suffered while working out Friday morning that necessitated a trip to the hospital.

Over at the Ritz-Carlton, where many of the inductors and presenters are staying, photographer Anton Corbin unwittingly held court in the lobby bar, visiting with Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page, who will inducted Jeff Beck and was returning from a visit to the museum, and with Metallica’s James Hetfield and his family as they came down for an early dinner. Sound checks and rehearsals took place at the Cleveland Public Auditorium, where the ceremony will be held; Womack worked through a medley that will include “Across 110th Street” and “It’s All Over Now,” while Metallica had to wait into the evening until crew members could arrive from France on a delayed flight. There was no sound check for what’s likely to be one of the night’s highlights — a jam on Tiny Bradshaw’s “Train Kept A-Rollin’ ” with Metallica, the Rolling Stones’ Ron Wood (who’s inducting Womack) and Aerosmith’s Joe Perry — but Perry told Billboard.com “that’s probably better. It’ll be a little looser and…raw.”

Saturday’s ceremony marks the first time general public tickets, priced at $35 and $75, were sold for the ceremony; all 5,000 were scooped up by fans in Cleveland and from out of town. On the main floor, where tables ran $15,000-$50,000, VIPs will dine on barbecued shrimp-topped grilled corn cakes with roasted poblano sauce, shoestring potatoes and a dessert called Blue Forest — flourless chocolate cake topped with kirsch whipped cream, brandied cherries and more chocolate sprayed with blue cocoa butter. A special vodka-based cocktail called Rhapsody in Blue will be served at the bar.

‘Born to Run’ Telecaster

Born to Run

Time for a replica of Bruce Springsteen’s ” Telecaster

Guitars, like their owners, aren’t immortal, which is one reason why Eric Clapton decided to donate his celebrated “Blackie” Fender Stratocaster for a charity auction five years ago. (It fetched just under a cool $1 million.) Years on the road and in the studio had taken its toll, he said, so it was time to move on.

Bruce Springsteen, the subject of a Sunday Calendar profile, may be feeling the same way about his most famous Telecaster, the one he’s holding on to on the cover of the “Born to Run” album, which was fairly road-tested when that album came out 34 years ago. The Boss recently started exploring the idea of getting a clone to take on tour so the original doesn’t suffer further abuse, asking the folks at Fender’s Custom Shop about building him a doppelganger.

One of the Custom Shop’s innovations has been its Tribute series of replica guitars, which are copies of famous instruments duplicated down to the nick, scuff, scratch and cigarette stain. Currently the company has an Andy Summers Telecaster and a Rory Gallagher Strat copied from those players’ own guitars. They’ve also mirrored guitars played by Stevie Ray Vaughan, Clapton and other guitar heroes.

After Springsteen expressed interest in a copy of his signature Tele, Custom Shop marketing director Mike Eldred suggested a limited run of the iconic guitar, with maybe 100 instruments from which proceeds could be donated to the charity of Springsteen’s choice.

“He sent us a note back, saying, ‘That sounds like about 99 too many,’ ” Eldred said recently. They’re still awaiting word on whether the Boss wants to move forward with just the one. In any case, fans may never know if he ever does get one, since the copies are virtually indistinguishable from the original. That one is currently on display at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland as part of a Springsteen exhibit, where you can look, but you’d better not touch.

Bad Company’s US Dates

Bad Company have revealed the tour dates for their eagerly anticipated reunion, and at the moment it’s not particularly good news for fans in Europe.

The reunited band will play ten dates in the US, many of them on the East Coast but chances of the tour expanding are looking slim.

Speaking to Billboard Paul Rodgers says that the band will be playing the limited run of shows in support of their new DVD, Hard Rock Live, which was recorded in Florida last year.

“It was a really good show — both the band and the fans were on fire,” says Rodgers on Billboard.com. “Queen does fantastic versions of my material, but it was very authentic playing with the (Bad Company) guys, very much the real deal, I guess.”

“We recorded a DVD that night, which we’re very proud of. The idea of releasing the DVD was a reality and supporting it is also a reality, and I think we really need to go out and do some dates in support of it. But I wanted to keep it to a minimum and keep it somewhat exclusive, too.”

Billboard reports that not only is the tour unlikely to expand but following the dates Rodgers will take a year off to start writing new material – although whether that material will be for a solo project or a second outing with Queen depends on which internet rumour you care to believe.

Here are Bad Company’s US Dates

June 17: Hollywood, FL (Hard Rock Live)
June 19: Atlanta, GA  (Chastain Park Amphitheatre)
June 20: Charlotte, NC (Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre)
June 23: Raleigh, NC (Music Pavilion at Walnut Creek)
June 24: Virginia Beach, FL (Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre)
June 27: Bethel, NY (Bethel Woods Center for the Arts)
June 28: Wantagh, NY (Nikon at Jones Beach Theatre)
July 1: Independence Township, MI (DTE Energy Music Theatre)
July 2: Canandaigua, NY (CMAC)
July 4: Atlantic City, NJ (Resorts Atlantic City)
